On Friday, August 28, seventeen members of Golden Gate Flyers converged on the Sunriver Resort, Oregon, in six airplanes. Flying up for the weekend from the San Francisco Bay Area were a Dassault Falcon 900, an Embraer Phenom, a Glasair I, a Cessna Cardinal RG, a Cessna 180, and a Piper Cherokee 6.

There was a 20 knot tailwind at 10,000 feet, so we made the trip up in 2.5 hours in the Cardinal. Although as late as mid-week the forecast was for a 50% chance of rain, the weather was nice and mild except for a few light showers early Saturday and Sunday mornings, clearing before noon both days.

Friday evening the group relaxed at the Village Bar & Grille with before-dinner cocktails and live music before making the short walk to Marcello’s Italian Restaurant for a scrumptious dinner.

Saturday afternoon after the morning showers it was windy enough that the group decided to go for bicycle rides or horseback riding instead of canoeing as originally planned.  Saturday evening the group met up at Carson’s American Kitchen restaurant at the main lodge for a delicious dinner in a private room. The food was great, and the service attentive.

The Sunday morning showers were conducive to sleeping in, so most of the group took right up until the 11:00 checkout time to wake up, shower, pack-up and have coffee and a light breakfast before heading to the airport.  Taking off about noon in the turbo Cardinal, we climbed to 13,000 feet to get on top and had light headwinds back to the bay area. Our trip home to KOAK was pleasant and uneventful, and took exactly three hours.

Everyone made it home safely, and we all agreed Sunriver with good friends made for a terrific weekend.  Many thanks to PICs Mike F. and John B. for coordinating activities and making reservations. The fly-in went off without a hitch thanks to their efforts.
